Hector's death

Hector's death in front of the walls of Troy

On the back block, inside the mausoleum, we can see the direct continuation of the scene just to the right (the fight between Achilles and Hector). The duel between the two champions, the Greek (Achilles) and the Trojan (Hector), leads to the death of Hector. Achilles refuses to return the body to Priam, king of Troy. Instead, he decides to tie it to his chariot and drag the body through the dust in front of the Trojans.

Although this relief is more damaged than the others, we can see Hector lying on the ground, while Achilles, on the left, leans forward slightly. He holds a sword in his right hand and prepares to deliver the fatal blow. In the background, we can see the wall of Troy with an opening in it.

Unlike the other blocks, this one has not been carved on the outside. We can therefore deduce that the monument rested against another wall, as we will discuss later with the new reconstruction.
