Achilles et Hector

Battle scene between Achilles and Hector

On the inside right, at the back of the scene of Ariadne's discovery on Naxos, we see two naked warriors facing each other. They are the two greatest warriors of the Iliad: Achilles and Hector. This is one of the highlights of the Trojan War, the duel between the Greek hero (Achilles) and the Trojan hero (Hector). Achilles finally gets his chance to avenge the death of his friend Patroclus, who was killed by Hector. What follows is a fight to the death from which only one of them emerges alive: Achilles.

To the left of the relief, Hector is armed with a sword in his right hand and an oval shield in the other. He is slightly bent over, suggesting a feint on his part to turn around Achilles. Achilles wears a helmet on his head and holds a spear in his right hand. He also carries an oval shield.
